The North Carolina State Board of Elections said Tuesday that technical problems in four counties could push back election results and may force polling places to stay open longer. Officials said results could slip from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. while they reviewed whether to extend voting hours at affected precincts.
That update came during Election Day, when every minute mattered to voters and campaigns waiting on returns across North Carolina. The board said the issues were minor, but the timing still carried real weight: results were expected to be delayed by at least 45 minutes, and officials were preparing to decide whether extra voting time was needed in the counties where problems were reported.
Jason Tyson said at 8 a.m. that officials were looking into a possible issue at Vinson-Bynum Elementary School in Wilson. By 11 a.m., the board said it was tracking minor technical issues at precincts in four counties, and at 12 p.m. it said election results could be pushed back from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Most polls were scheduled to close at 7:30 p.m., with a few precincts staying open later because of earlier issues.
The board’s response showed how a small problem at a precinct can ripple through a statewide election night. Voters at Vinson-Bynum Elementary School reported delays, and the Recreation Center in Wilson at 500 Sunset Road NW was open for an additional 15 minutes on Tuesday night. Even so, Tyson said the emergency meeting planned for 2 p.m. was part of normal Election Day operations and was labeled emergency only to satisfy public notice rules.
The board said minor disruptions can happen on Election Day and that it works with election staff on contingency plans. Still, the fact that officials were weighing extended hours in four counties while preparing to hold results until after 8:30 p.m. underscored how quickly routine problems can shape the pace of election night. The question left for the board was not whether the issues mattered, but whether they were serious enough to justify keeping some precincts open longer.
