Oregon and Washington voters will start seeing the first election returns at 8 p.m. Tuesday, but the count will not be finished then. Ballots postmarked by Election Day will keep arriving and being tallied throughout the week, which means the opening numbers will be only a slice of the final total.

That was the message from John Horvick of DHM Research, who appeared on FOX 12 on Monday and told voters to treat the first drop counts as an early snapshot, not a verdict. He said the earliest results would give people something to watch, but not enough to draw firm conclusions about how the races will end.

The reason that warning matters is that the biggest contests remain close enough for small shifts to matter. In Oregon, the governor's race between Tina Kotek and Christine Drazan remained highly competitive, with earlier polling showing tight margins and public survey data thinning out in the final weeks of the campaign. Horvick said the debate had centered on affordability, housing costs, taxes, and government performance, and he described the race as one where voters were weighing whether government was working as it should.

He also said he had seen early voting patterns that suggested voters were already making up their minds before Election Day, but he stopped short of saying those trends would settle anything quickly. That caution reflects the structure of the count itself: the first returns arrive early, while a large share of ballots can still move the totals for days after Tuesday night.

In Southwest Washington, a different race has drawn its own attention. The 3rd Congressional District contest between Marie Gluesenkamp Perez and John Braun has brought significant national funding and attention, another reminder that the first numbers on election night can only tell part of the story. For Oregon Election Results watchers, the real benchmark begins at 8 p.m. Tuesday, but the full answer will keep taking shape long after the first drop counts are posted.
