Jack Lowden is back in the Bond conversation as the search for the next James Bond moves closer to a decision. Amazon MGM Studios confirmed in May that the casting process was under way, and that has set off another round of talk about who might inherit 007.
The reason the speculation has sharpened now is simple: the studio has not ruled out a year-end announcement, and Amy Pascal said in an interview with Deadline that the end of the year is a good bet for news. That gives the chatter around Lowden a new edge, especially since he has been one of the names repeatedly bandied about for the part.
The Bond role has a way of turning rumor into industry sport. Only six people have ever played James Bond in the official film series, so every hint about the next casting matters more than it would for most franchises. The last announcement of a new Bond came in 2005, which is why even a brief update from the studio can send the same names back into circulation.
And yet the picture remains murky. Daniel Richtman said on social media that the team might already have found its man in the final round of casting, while Jeff Sneider said he had heard the same rumor but doubted it was any of the usual frontrunners. Earlier this year, Variety reported that stage actor Tom Francis had auditioned, and late August brought another layer of noise when Page Six claimed more auditions would happen this month and that Paul Mescal and Jack Barton were on the list.
That leaves the central question unresolved, even as the deadline for news draws nearer: whether Lowden is actually in the final mix or simply one of the better-known names that keeps resurfacing whenever Bond becomes the subject of speculation. The studio has already said it does not plan to comment on specific details during the casting process, which means the next hard fact may not come until Amazon MGM Studios is ready to speak.
The Bond production announcement promised to keep Bond's spirit alive as he embarks on his next adventure. For now, that is still all anyone has in public: a franchise moving forward, a shortlist that may or may not be real, and Jack Lowden remaining one of the names fans and insiders keep returning to until the official answer arrives.
