Pacific Coast Producers initiated a recall on October 1 for 1,836 cases of 15-ounce cans of Great Value Fruit Cocktail in Fruit Juice From Concentrate after the product was found to have potentially elevated levels of lead. The cans were sold under Walmart's Great Value brand and distributed in Alabama, Arizona, Louisiana, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, Washington and Wyoming.
The warning matters because lead exposure is not a minor quality issue. Federal health guidance says there is no known safe level of lead exposure in children, and it can also harm adults through high blood pressure, kidney damage, reproductive problems, joint and muscle pain, mood disorders and headaches. For pregnant people, exposure can also harm a developing fetus.
Consumers who bought the fruit cocktail are being told to check the identifying information on the cans, then discard the product or return it to the store where it was purchased. The recall also leaves one practical question hanging for shoppers: which cans are included, since the product is sold under Walmart's Great Value label even though Pacific Coast Producers is the company named in the recall.
The Great Value fruit cocktail recall is one of several food recalls reported in the same period, but it stands out because it involves a widely sold canned fruit product and a contaminant with no known safe level for children. That makes the next step straightforward for anyone who bought it: check the can before serving it, and do not keep it in the pantry.
