Journey brought Hugo Valenti back onstage in Japan for a second straight show, and this time he did more than trade verses. In Tokyo on Tuesday night, Valenti took lead vocals on the Escape deep cut “Keep on Runnin’” after singing “Faithfully” on Saturday night in Fukuoaka.
That is the kind of booking that makes fans lean in. Valenti fronts Hugo: The Ultimate Journey Tribute, but his name carries extra weight in Journey circles because he once said he auditioned to replace Steve Perry and was told he looked too much like him. Two Japanese shows in a row now put him in the band’s live orbit, not just on the tribute circuit.
The Tokyo set gave the guest appearance real shape. Valenti was not the only voice on stage, with Arnel Pineda, Deen Castronovo, Jonathan Cain and Jason Derlatka also handling lead duties at different points during the show. But Valenti’s turn on “Keep on Runnin’” stood out because it turned a one-night cameo into a second consecutive appearance with a different song and a larger role.
That matters because Journey has not said whether it is building toward anything more with him. Neither the band nor Valenti has announced future collaborations, and the unanswered question is whether these Japan dates are simply a special detour or the start of a wider pattern. For now, the facts point to something narrower: Journey liked what it heard enough to invite him back immediately.
The timing adds another layer. After three Labor Day weekend shows in Honolulu, Journey is set to launch what Neal Schon called the group’s “final fall dates” on Sept. 12 in Los Angeles, with the Final Frontier tour scheduled to end on Nov. 28 in Journey’s hometown of San Francisco. It is still unclear whether those dates will truly close the tour, but Valenti’s two-show run in Japan has already become one of the more noticeable side stories of the stretch.
