Jennifer Lawrence has confirmed she is returning to the Hunger Games universe for The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, ending months of speculation around the next film in the franchise. She made the reveal on the Call Her Daddy podcast after being asked about the movie due in theaters next month.

Lawrence’s answer matters because it is the first on-the-record confirmation of a return that had circulated in reports last year but was never officially locked in. She previously played Katniss Everdeen in the original movies, and her return gives the new chapter a direct link to the films that made the series a global phenomenon.

She did not describe the size of her role, but she made clear that the reunion felt personal. “Unbelievable,” she said of being back with the franchise, adding that it was “so crazy” because it was the same crew, the same camera guys and the same AD she had worked with many times before. She said it was emotional being back with Josh and Woody, and that she and Josh “didn’t walk to the bathroom without our arms around each other.”

That is the point readers have been waiting for: not just whether Lawrence would come back, but how. Her comments confirm the reunion without spelling out whether it is a full role or a cameo, which leaves the film’s return plan partly open even as the cast connection is now official.

The film itself, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, is based on Suzanne Collins’ bestselling novel and follows sixteen-year-old Haymitch Abernathy from District 12 during the morning of the reaping for the 50th Annual Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell. The story tracks Haymitch into the arena as the biggest Games yet unfold, with twice as many tributes and a fight that pushes toward President Snow’s control of Panem.

For now, the headline is simple: Lawrence is back, at least in some form, and the franchise is leaning on its past as it moves toward its next chapter. The one thing the film still is not saying out loud is exactly how much of her presence audiences will get when it opens on November 20.

When she was asked about Woody, Lawrence said he had “obviously” come through the window of her hotel room uninvited because, as she put it, it would not be the same. That kind of joke only lands because the return is real now, and because the old cast chemistry is no longer rumor.
