Walmart widened a frozen berry recall to include one lot of 10-ounce Great Value frozen Organic Triple Berry Blend sold in stores across 16 states after an earlier blueberry recall raised E. coli concerns. The expanded notice adds another Walmart product to a recall that had already started with frozen blueberries in July.
The mixed berries were sold in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas and Wisconsin, giving the recall a much broader retail footprint than the original berry notice. Shoppers who bought the blend are being told to check for a Universal Product Code of 7874211226 and a best by date of Feb. 9, 2028.
The expansion matters because it reaches a product already sitting in home freezers, not just one still moving through supply chains. That is why a recall tied first to one berry product can quickly become a much wider consumer alert once the same contamination concern is traced into another mix.
Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A., the Chilean supplier named in the recall, originally pulled 10-ounce GreenWise Organic IQF Blueberries in July after reports that consumers had gotten sick after eating them. That earlier blueberry recall was linked to 17 reported illnesses in Florida and Georgia, including six hospitalizations. The mixed berry blend now added to the Walmart recall has not been tied to any illness reports yet.
The mismatch is the part shoppers should not miss: the earlier blueberry problem had already produced sick consumers, while the new Walmart blend has only been recalled out of caution so far. E. coli O145, the strain identified in the warning, is a Shiga toxin-producing bacterium that can cause severe stomach cramps, diarrhea that may be bloody and nausea, which is why a retail recall can move faster than illness reports do. For now, the unresolved question is not whether the recall is serious; it is how many packages of the Triple Berry Blend were in the lot that was pulled.
