Anthropic introduced Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1, then split them into two paths. Fable 5.1 is generally available. Mythos 5.1 is limited to trusted access programs, even though Anthropic says both are the same underlying model with different safeguards.
The release lands now because it is not just a model refresh. It is also a pricing and access reset. Anthropic says Fable 5.1 will cost an estimated 25% less than Fable 5 for typical token-billed work, with savings on highly agentic tasks often reaching about 45%. For users who live in code editors and company tools, Anthropic says the model defaults to High effort in Claude Code, Medium in Claude Cowork and Claude.ai, and that it is meant to set a new standard for coding, knowledge work and long-running problem-solving.
That pitch is backed by a narrow but meaningful test case. Millennium said Fable 5.1 identified the cause of a rare crash on its internal systems after several years in which engineers and other models had not solved it. Anthropic also pointed to benchmark gains across Terminal-Bench-Science 0.1, Terminal-Bench 4.0, Humanity’s Last Exam and CursorBench 3.2.0, using them to argue that the update is stronger than Fable 5 while staying cheaper when set to Low or Medium effort.
The friction is that the same model family is still being wrapped in different guardrails depending on use. Anthropic says its newest safeguards block 60% fewer false positives in cybersecurity, and that Fable 5.1 can be used to discover software vulnerabilities but not develop exploits for them. At the same time, Mythos 5.1 remains behind a trusted access program, and Anthropic has set up a separate access program with the US government so scientists can reach its advanced biology capabilities. That means the company is widening one door while keeping another tightly controlled.
Anthropic is also changing how the product is handled for enterprises. Its Enterprise Frontier Safeguards are designed to keep data private while storing it in cloud infrastructure controlled entirely by the customer, not Anthropic. Eligible customers will be able to use Fable 5.1 with zero data retention until EFS is available, and the company says EFS will roll out to enterprise customers in phases beginning later this fall. Enrollment for scientists is expected to open soon. What comes next is less about another model drop than about who gets access, under what rules, and how much control enterprises and researchers are willing to trade for the new capabilities.
