Tonda Eckert said Southampton will go into Tuesday's Championship trip to Birmingham City with a very light build-up, after a recovery day from the Millwall match and a final session on Tuesday morning before travel. He framed it as a short turnaround, but one the Saints are managing carefully.
That matters now because the fixture has arrived with the usual late-window noise around deadline day, even though Eckert did not name any exits. Instead, he focused on the football and on the work still to be done before the Blues. He said he would meet the staff on Sunday and then present something for Monday for the players, with the aim of keeping the group fresh for what he described as one of the toughest games ahead.
Eckert's read on Birmingham was blunt. From what he has seen, he said they have gone a little more direct than he remembered from last season, and he expects the ground itself to make the night harder still. He called it one of the toughest places to go, especially for a night game, which is about as clear a warning as a manager can give before an away trip in the Championship.
There was a small practical edge to his comments too. Eckert said he would watch Birmingham's game on Saturday night, then work with his staff on Sunday, and he made no attempt to hide how much is squeezed into these days. He said managers always have to think ahead, but added that he does not need his legs on matchday, which is why the planning can begin while the players recover.

A light Monday, a Tuesday morning session, and then travel to Birmingham leaves little room for anything else. That is the point of his update: the trip is not being treated like a routine league game, and Eckert clearly wants his players ready before they arrive at what he sees as one of the hardest grounds on the schedule.
