For San Francisco, the draw is immediate and measurable: city leaders say the week should bring visitors, business, and international attention, with attendees moving through the city from one venue to the next. The events are built around the championships and the fan convention, but they are also built around the scale of the crowd, and that scale is already visible.
Long lines formed Wednesday outside Moscone West as attendees checked in and picked up event credentials. That scene fit the size of the gathering, which is large enough to fill a convention center, a ballpark, and a championship arena across the same week. The most direct evidence of how many people are inside that flow is the line itself: tens of thousands is not a casual estimate, but a crowd that turns arrival into part of the event.
Greg Fortier said the city has embraced the week and called it “kind of crazy.” Fortier, who qualified to compete in Pokémon Go, said this is his second year qualifying for world championships. Shawn Schimpf of Alberta, Canada, put the gathering in simpler terms: “These are our pokeman cards. We’re here to trade on the world stage.” Francisco Alca, a competitor from Peru, said he was excited to visit a city he had wanted to see for a long time, and an attendee from Japan said, “I love San Francisco yes,” underscoring how far the pull reaches.
That international mix is part of the point of Pokémon XP, which is being launched as a first-ever fan convention alongside the championships. Many attendees are seeing San Francisco for the first time, and the week’s schedule is designed to keep them moving between competition and celebration before the finals on Sunday. The open question is not whether the city has drawn a crowd; it has.
