Pokémon GO is changing the Explorer Gadget so it can now keep working even while trainers are actively playing. The feature will still automatically try to catch Pokémon and spin PokéStops when the game is closed, but it will also aid players in real time when the game is open.
The update is aimed at trainers who want the feature to do more without stepping away from the map. Players at level 20 and higher can turn it on from the icon in the top right of the map view or from the Key Items section of the Item Bag, and they can check a summary of what it caught or spun by opening the same menu again. That makes the Explorer Gadget a more active tool than before, when it only ran in the background while Pokémon GO was not open.
The change matters because it gives trainers a choice the old version did not. While the Explorer Gadget is active on the map, a pink Poké Ball icon will appear over Pokémon or PokéStops it is trying to catch or spin, and players can tap that Pokémon or PokéStop if they want to handle it themselves. The same feature also means the gadget can keep running without requiring trainers to unpair a separate accessory device such as Pokémon GO Plus +, which is useful for anyone who already uses one of those devices during play.
There is still a catch. The Explorer Gadget is built to act automatically, but once the pink Poké Ball icon appears, trainers get only a limited window to override it before the gadget makes the move itself. That creates a small pause for anyone who wants to take control, and it is the detail that will decide how often the new version feels helpful rather than intrusive. The gadget also will not attempt every encounter, including Pokémon that are not yet registered in a Pokédex or mighty Pokémon, so the real-world result will depend on what is on the map in front of the player.
For now, the biggest takeaway is simple: the Explorer Gadget is no longer just a background helper. It is becoming part of live play, and the unanswered question is not whether it works, but how much control trainers will feel they have when it does.
