Port St. Lucie flooding stalls cars on Southwest Airoso Boulevard after heavy rain

Heavy rain turned part of Port St. Lucie into a slow-moving flood zone on Southwest Airoso Boulevard, where water rose to about knee-deep in some spots and stranded drivers who tried to push through. Port St. Lucie police told residents to stay off the roads unless travel was absolutely necessary.

The warning came as officers handled a significant number of calls about vehicles stuck in floodwaters. One driver said his vehicle died while he was trying to pick up his children. Another woman said her vehicle stopped working just minutes after she drove toward Southwest Airoso Boulevard, and that every time a car passed, it pushed her vehicle farther around in the water.

For some families, the flooding quickly became more than an inconvenience. One woman said parents were notified that they needed to retrieve their students from school, adding another urgent trip to roads already under water. A couple said their vehicle had been stranded for about an hour and was sinking deeper into the floodwaters as they waited for help.

The scene also sharpened a complaint residents have raised after repeated heavy rain events: drainage on Southwest Airoso Boulevard has not kept pace with road changes around it. One woman said the city keeps widening the roads without improving anything else, a frustration that grew stronger after she said her sister lost a nearly new vehicle to flooding on the same road last year.

What happens next is still unclear. The flooding was part of a broader heavy rain event across the Treasure Coast, and the immediate public guidance remained simple: stay away from the waterlogged roads until conditions improve. Whether Port St. Lucie moves quickly on drainage or road repairs after this round of flooding has not been said.
