A private Learjet 60 crashed Sunday in a residential neighborhood in Palm Beach County, Florida, killing all nine people aboard and leaving a large crater in the road near moving vehicles. The FAA said the accident happened at 12:50 local time, and federal investigators are now trying to determine why the aircraft came down and exploded.

Sean Duffy called the loss a terrible tragedy, underscoring the scale of the crash that turned a routine flight into a fatal scene in seconds. The jet had departed from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas and was scheduled to travel to the Bahamas, a route that ended before it could leave Florida airspace.

What made the crash so jarring was how it looked in video images: the blast and fireball gave the impression of a missile strike to some viewers. But the wreck was an airplane crash, and the distinction matters because it points investigators back to the aircraft itself, not to anything outside it.

The wreckage landed about 10 km from Mar-a-Lago, in the county where Donald Trump has his residence, adding another layer of public attention to an already grim scene. The FAA and the NTSB will investigate the crash together, and their findings will have to explain how a private jet bound for the Bahamas ended in a residential road with no survivors.

For now, the only certain answers are the ones that count most: nine dead, one Learjet 60 destroyed, and a federal probe that will have to piece together the final moments of Sunday’s flight from Texas to Florida.
