Disney has put a hard number on the making of Deadpool & Wolverine: more than $550 million before offsets, according to a new earnings filing. The same disclosure shows the film qualified for about $110 million in UK rebates and tax breaks, trimming the bill but not erasing how expensive the project became.
That is why the movie is being searched now. The filing makes public the scale of a production that was already known to be big, but not this big, and it lands on a film that became one of Disney’s biggest recent wins at the box office. Deadpool & Wolverine took in over $1.3 billion worldwide, making it Marvel’s most successful release directly since Avengers: Endgame.
Ryan Reynolds was one of the A-list names attached to the film, and the cost reflects the kind of production that does not come cheap once star salaries, reshoots and the machinery around a Marvel release are all counted. The movie was made through Richmond Street Productions Ltd, and the company’s filings confirm it went over budget. That matters because the UK accounts had to be published after the film qualified for tax relief there, giving an unusually clear look at what Disney actually spent.
The biggest overrun, though, did not come from talent alone. A pair of strikes in 2023 forced production to stop after filming had already begun, and more material was developed during the shutdown. Disney still had to keep funding the production facilities while the cameras were off, which is how a film that finished as a billion-dollar grosser could still carry a production bill above half a billion dollars. The UK rebate softened the blow by about $110 million, but it did not change the fact that the movie moved far beyond the level most audiences would guess from its ticket sales alone.
What Disney has not shown yet is the full bottom line. Box office is only one part of the equation, and the film’s eventual profit from theatrical play, home formats and merchandise is still not spelled out in the filing. For now, the number that stands out is the one Disney had to report: Deadpool & Wolverine cost far more to make than many fans would ever have expected, even after the UK offset.
