A motorcycle chase that began in Wyandotte ended in a fatal crash in Riverview on Thursday night, and Michigan State Police are now investigating what happened. Police said the rider later died after being taken to a nearby hospital.

Wyandotte police said they first got reports of a man on a motorcycle traveling over 100 mph on Biddle Avenue. Officers located him near Biddle Avenue and Spruce Street and tried to stop him, but he kept going and fled at more than 100 mph.

Police said the motorcycle then moved into oncoming traffic during the pursuit before the ride crossed into Riverview. The chase ended when the motorcyclist lost control on a dead-end road and crashed. The machine did not have a license plate, police said.

That is the part that matters most tonight: a stop that began as a traffic complaint became a high-speed run through two cities, and it ended with a death on the road. Police have not released the driver’s identity, and they have not said why the attempted stop was made in the first place.

Michigan State Police are continuing the crash investigation, which will have to answer not just how the motorcycle came apart at speed, but why officers were trying to pull it over before the chase began.
