Valley Children's Hospital lifts lockdown after threat search finds no danger

Valley Children's Hospital lifted its lockdown after law enforcement found no danger on campus, ending a tense morning that had shut down much of the facility around 11 a.m. Only the Main and Emergency Department entrances were open after the restrictions were eased.

The move came after a threatening phone call sent Madera police and Madera County Sheriff's deputies to the hospital, with a California Highway Patrol helicopter circling overhead as the search unfolded. For patients, families and team members inside the hospital, the immediate question was whether the reported threat was real; by the time the lockdown was lifted, authorities had not found one.

Zara Arboleda said the lockdown at Valley Children's Hospital and across campus had been lifted based on guidance from law enforcement partners. She also said the hospital kept an increased law enforcement presence on campus while the situation was monitored, underscoring that the day did not end with a simple all-clear.

That is where the case turned more troubling. The Madera County Sheriff's Office said investigators believed the threats may have been intentionally fabricated, even as the investigation remained active and ongoing. In a written statement, the office said it takes every threat seriously and investigates each one thoroughly, whether or not it is ultimately judged credible.

For now, the hospital is open again, but not back to business as usual. The lockdown is over, the search produced no threat, and the question left hanging is who made the call — and why investigators think it may have been made up in the first place.
