Luke Grimes says he has not spoken to Kevin Costner since their time on Yellowstone ended, and that the relationship did not continue after Costner left the Taylor Sheridan series in 2024. Grimes made the remarks in a recent interview and described the silence as a simple result of busy schedules and life moving on.
The comments land now because Grimes is tied to Marshals, the new chapter built around his Yellowstone character, and that makes any talk of Kevin Costner especially relevant. On the show, Costner played John Dutton and Grimes played Kayce Dutton for four seasons, so a reunion would carry real weight for viewers looking for a connection back to the original series.
Grimes said it would be cool if Costner joined Marshals, but he also said he doubts that would ever happen. That leaves the idea in the realm of possibility rather than expectation, which is the clearest reading of where things stand between the two actors now. He was even more specific when asked about a possible flashback, saying he would probably rather see it with Monica than John because it would feel more poignant to the character.
That answer matters because it draws a clean line between what fans may want and what the story can realistically support. Grimes has already taken Kayce from the ranch into Marshals, where the character joins an elite unit of U.S. Marshals in Montana, and the show is now carrying his future without the need to depend on Costner’s presence.
It also shows how final the split appears to be. Grimes said there was no reason for the lack of contact other than that both men are busy, but the practical effect is the same: the long-running on-screen partnership between John Dutton and Kayce Dutton is over for now, and any reunion would have to happen by design, not by accident.
For the moment, the answer to whether Costner will ever appear on Marshals is no more than Grimes’s own skepticism. He leaves the door cracked, just enough for a cool idea, but not enough to suggest it is coming soon.
