Oak Forest High School went into lockdown Tuesday just before 11 a.m. after Oak Forest police responded to a possible threat on campus. The school remained under a coordinated police response as officers worked through the building.
The South Suburban Emergency Response Team carried out that sweep while police with long guns and at least one K-9 were seen on the school campus. No injuries were reported, and officials said the incident was contained.
That left the most basic question unanswered: what, exactly, prompted the lockdown at Oak Forest High School? Officials did not immediately provide any additional information on the nature of the threat, even as the response showed how quickly a concern at a school can turn into a major operation.
The visible police presence underscored the scale of the response at the south suburban school, but it did not fill in the gap that matters most to students and staff. For now, the immediate danger appears to have passed, but the reason for the lockdown has not been explained.
