Firefighters were battling a brush fire near homes in La Habra Heights on Sunday afternoon after the blaze was reported just after 2:30 p.m. in the 2400 block of Las Palomas Drive. By 3:20 p.m., it had burned approximately 10 acres, and evacuation warnings were issued around 3:30 p.m. for several zones in Los Angeles County.
Los Angeles County Fire Department firefighters were assisting the Orange County Fire Authority with the fire, which was burning close enough to homes that aerial footage showed at least one engulfed in flames. Even so, firefighters had not said whether any homes were damaged, leaving the extent of the loss unclear as crews continued working in the area.
No injuries had been reported, but the fire’s cause remained unknown. That combination — a fast-moving brush fire, flames near homes, and warnings issued within minutes of the acreage update — is what made the afternoon urgent for residents in La Habra Heights and nearby parts of Los Angeles County.
What remains unanswered is the simplest question of the day: whether any homes were actually damaged, and how much farther the fire may spread before crews can get it fully contained.
