Bungie has pushed Marathon’s next major update off its planned September 22 slot and folded that content into Symbiosis, now due December 8. Before that, the game will get a smaller October 6 update that resets progression and the in-game economy, refreshes rewards and aims to improve the live game.
The change matters because it redraws the path players had been expecting. Instead of waiting for one large drop, they will get a reset first, then a broader package that includes a new Runner shell, a permanent PvE experience, a refreshed Perimeter zone, a social space and firing range, an experimental TDM mode and better onboarding for new players.
Bungie is also moving Marathon away from a strict seasonal schedule. The studio says the new approach gives the team more room to build, test and improve features before they ship, which is a clear break from a calendar that had been locking the game into fixed beats. In practice, it means the next stretch of Marathon will be paced around what Bungie thinks the game needs rather than around a rigid seasonal clock.
That shift comes after Marathon Season 2: Nightfall launched with progression and reward problems that pushed some players into the endgame faster than others and left the rest behind. Bungie says Marathon needs more depth, more variety, stronger progression and better reasons to keep playing over the long term, a frank admission that the current structure has not held everyone together.
The tension is hard to miss: Bungie is promising a more alien and dynamic survival experience while also using a reset to repair how rewards and progression work now. Vault Breaker will return for a limited time, giving the studio more data on how PvE fits into progression a few weeks after the reset, but the first real test comes earlier, when the October 6 update lands and shows whether the live game can be steadied before the larger Symbiosis release.
Bungie has not said how long the new release rhythm will last after March, only that Symbiosis is the start of a broader evolution through March and beyond. The next marker on the calendar is later this month, when Bungie plans its first blog on Marathon’s future. Until then, the main answer is simple: the September update is gone, the October reset comes first, and December 8 now carries the weight of Marathon’s next big step.
