CBS is bringing Norah O'Donnell back to CBS Mornings on 8 September, putting her in the chair alongside Gayle King and Nate Burleson just as the network looks for a lift on a show that has been losing ground. O'Donnell is returning to the morning desk after years away, and CBS is framing the move as a reunion with the team she once helped build.
The timing matters because the numbers have been rough. In July, CBS Mornings averaged 1.62 million total viewers, well behind NBC at 2.77 million and ABC at 2.79 million. During the stretch from 27 to 31 July, the program drew 1.57 million average total viewers, its smallest audience in the figures reported here. CBS has already been experimenting with guest co-hosts, including Elisabeth Hasselbeck in June, as it searched for a combination that could steady the broadcast.
For O'Donnell, the move marks a return to familiar ground. She co-hosted CBS Mornings from 2012 to 2019 before moving on to the evening news role, which Tony Dokoupil later took over after the 2024 presidential election. More recently, she was named a correspondent for 60 Minutes and promoted from contributor to full-time correspondent for the 59th season, making her return to the morning show less a leap than a reset inside CBS.
That reset is being sold internally as a homecoming, even though it comes after a long detour through the evening newscast. In a memo, Jon Tower said he could not think of a team he would rather watch navigate the news than Gayle King, Nate Burleson and Norah O'Donnell, stressing the friendship and chemistry among them. The language suggests CBS is betting that familiarity, not a fresh face, is the fastest way to stop the slide.
O'Donnell herself sounded almost physically in motion when she described the timing. She said she is in New Hampshire with her youngest child after dropping three children off at college this past week, and added that she is thrilled to work closely with the team again and will see them in New York next week. That makes the return feel less like a broad programming strategy and more like a direct attempt to put a proven name back where viewers already know her.
What CBS has not said is how long the revamped lineup is meant to last. For now, the answer is simple: O'Donnell is back on 8 September, and the network is choosing her and her old morning partners to see whether recognition can do what recent guest turns and lineup shuffling have not.
