Retroid has teased the Retroid Pocket Duo, a new dual-screen handheld that pushes the company deeper into the small but crowded lane of modern DS-style devices. The reveal is just a video on X for now, but it is enough to put the Pocket Duo into the same conversation as the few machines chasing Nintendo DS nostalgia.
That conversation matters because the appeal of this kind of device is easy to understand and hard to execute. A dual-screen handheld has to get the hinge right, keep the displays usable, and avoid pricing itself out of reach. Stuff says the Pocket Duo would need to match the Pocket Nova in power, controls, display and build before it could be an easy buy, and it would need an insanely robust hinge and a price that does not bite too hard.
The timing helps explain why the teaser is drawing attention now. Anbernic has just released the RG DS Plus, while the Ayn Thor is already being treated as the king of this modern DS castle, with dual AMOLED displays, a price to match and shipping times that stretch out longer than many buyers would like. Retroid has already shown it can work around this idea in smaller ways, and an add-on display could even turn some single-screen Retroid handhelds into a dual-screen machine, but that is not the same as building the thing as one unit.
That gap is where the Pocket Duo lives at the moment. It is being presented as something desirable, but it is still a console shrouded in shadow, with no specs, no operating system details, no price and no release date. The video is backed by extremely rousing music, which gives the teaser some swagger, yet it also underlines how little Retroid has actually put on the table.
For now, the Pocket Duo reads like a promise to DS fans rather than a finished product. Retroid has entered the race, but until it shows the hardware, the question is not whether people want a dual-screen handheld. It is whether this one can be built well enough, and priced sensibly enough, to compete with the devices already on the track.
