Jeopardy! Season 43 begins Sept. 14 with Ken Jennings back as host, and the show is bringing in a sharper-looking set, new lighting colors and tournament rule changes for the new run. Producers said the game will keep its question-and-answer format, even as the stage gets a visible refresh and the competition rules shift.
That update landed on the Sept. 3 episode of the Inside Jeopardy! Podcast, where Michael Davies and Sarah Whitcomb-Foss outlined what is changing before the premiere. Whitcomb-Foss said the set had new columns and new lighting colors, calling it a glow-up, while Davies said the goal was a richer lighting look. The changes arrive just as viewers are searching for what Season 43 will actually look like when it starts on Sept. 14.
The timing matters because the show is not waiting for the season to settle before making its move. The producers said they received more than 1,300 applications for the new writer position after Jim Ryan retired, and that search had already been narrowed to the final four by the time of the podcast. The season theme is Knowledge Wins, and Davies used that phrase to frame the show’s direction: facts matter, knowledge wins.
There is also a quieter point buried inside the polish. The producers said the new set upgrades may not jump out to every viewer unless they are watching closely, even as the competition side of the show gets real changes. They said the postseason qualification period has ended, the system will not roll over into Season 43 and there will be no more rolling qualification weeks. In other words, the show is resetting the path to the postseason instead of carrying old rules forward.
That reset gives Season 43 a clean start, and it also sets up a fuller picture of how the next stretch of Jeopardy! will work. Davies said more big announcements are coming in the next month and a half, and he also raised the idea of a live version of Jeopardy! as something the producers want to discuss in the months ahead. For now, the main answer is already clear: the new season opens on Sept. 14 with Jennings on the podium, a brighter set on screen and a new rules slate underneath it all.
