Hallmark Channel kicked off its annual Countdown to Christmas event on Friday, opening a nine-week run that will bring 34 new holiday films to viewers. It is the network's largest holiday movie slate yet, and it arrives with the kind of built-in audience Hallmark has spent years cultivating.
The timing matters because holiday movie times are now part of the seasonal routine for viewers who wait for the network's annual rollout. Hallmark said last year's Countdown to Christmas reached 38 million unique viewers, a figure that helps explain why the new lineup is being expanded rather than scaled back.
This year's slate also includes a third installment of Holiday Touchdown and a movie inspired by a Brad Paisley song, two additions meant to keep the event from feeling repetitive even as the schedule grows. Hallmark is leaning on familiar formulas, but it is also betting that a bigger slate can keep viewers returning week after week.
The one piece still left hanging is the shape of the full rollout. Hallmark has said the 34 films will land across nine weeks, but not every title has been laid out in a way that makes the order easy to track from the start. That leaves the event with a clear opening and a simple promise: more new holiday films are coming, and soon enough the schedule will have to carry the load.
