Sid Meier's Civilization 7 is free to play on Steam for one week, starting Sept. 3 at 10 a.m. PT and running through Sept. 10 at 10 a.m. PT. Anyone who decides to buy it during the promotion gets 50% off, bringing the price to $34.99.
The timing gives players a rare chance to try a major 2025 strategy game without paying, and Firaxis is tying the offer to the franchise's 35th anniversary. That makes the promotion more than a routine discount: it is a push to widen the audience while the game is still being shaped by updates and player feedback.
In May, Civilization 7 received the massive Test of Time update, which reworked systems that players were unhappy with at launch. One of the biggest changes let players stay with their original civilization through an entire campaign instead of being forced to switch civilizations at each Age transition, while Syncretism and Affirmation gave players more control over how their civilization develops.
That said, the free week is arriving while the game still has rough edges, especially around diplomacy and some less-developed systems. The offer invites new players in at the same time Firaxis is still smoothing out parts of the design, which means the promotion is also a test of whether the game now feels complete enough to hold them.
Firaxis developers are set to talk about the past, present and future of the franchise at PAX West in Seattle on Sept. 5 at 2 p.m. PT, and the panel will be livestreamed. Ed Beach, Tom Shaw and Matt Owens are scheduled to appear, giving the studio a chance to explain where Civilization 7 stands now and what comes next after the free-play window closes on Sept. 10 at 10 a.m. PT.
