Sofía Vergara brought the Modern Family cast back into the conversation on Instagram, posting dinner photos with Ed O'Neill, Julie Bowen, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Christopher Lloyd. She called them her “American family” and said she could not believe it had been six years since the series finale.

The post landed now because the gap itself is the story. Modern Family ran for 11 seasons from 2009 to 2020, won 22 Emmys and finished as one of television’s most durable comedies, so even a simple dinner picture from Vergara carries the weight of a reunion years in the making. For fans searching for the Modern Family cast, the photos are a fresh reminder that the bond did not end when the final episode aired.

Vergara has been plain about why the connection matters to her. In June, she said the cast still used its group chat a lot, and she has often singled out O'Neill as the person who steadied her on the set. “I miss Ed O'Neill so much,” she said. “I mean, I miss everyone, but … most of my scenes were always with Ed O'Neill.” She added that she spent most of the 11 years with him and called him “such a great friend” and “such a great pillar” during what was her first major acting job.

That affection also explains the one detail that kept the reunion from looking complete. Vergara hosted a larger cast get-together in 2023 that included O'Neill, Bowen, Ferguson, Sarah Hyland, Eric Stonestreet, Ariel Winter, Rico Rodriguez, Nolan Gould and Aubrey Anderson-Emmons, but Ty Burrell was not in that photo group. Vergara later answered that absence with a joke, posting a separate image of Burrell on a mantel and writing, “We miss u Ty!!”

So this latest dinner is less a one-off than proof that the old ensemble still moves as a unit when it wants to. The series may be over, but Vergara keeps reopening the same door, and the people who made Modern Family one of ABC’s signature hits appear just as willing to walk through it.
