Tom Skerritt, the Emmy-winning actor whose authority figures and calm intensity helped define film and television for six decades, died Wednesday of natural causes at 93, his family said. The news closes the career of a Detroit native who was best known to generations of viewers through M*A*S*H, Alien, Top Gun and Picket Fences.

Skerritt’s family said he was more than the roles that made him famous. They described him as someone who cared deeply about imagination, creativity, storytelling, service, veterans and the natural world, and said he brought humor, curiosity, wisdom and generosity into their lives. That personal portrait sits beside a screen career that often put him in positions of command, from Southern surgeon Duke Forrest in M*A*S*H to small-town sheriff Jimmy Brock on Picket Fences.

His breakthrough came with the 1970 feature M*A*S*H, where he played Duke Forrest and worked with Robert Altman, a collaboration he repeated in Thieves Like Us. Skerritt later portrayed Shirley MacLaine’s husband in The Turning Point, played Tom Cruise’s Air Force instructor Mike “Viper” Metcalf in Top Gun and was memorable as a minister and the patriarch of the MacLean family in A River Runs Through It. He also starred as Will Kane in a 2000 remake of High Noon for TBS.

One of the more revealing turns in that career came from Alien. Skerritt originally turned down the role of Captain Dallas before reconsidering after learning that Ridley Scott had signed on to direct. That hesitation, and the change of mind that followed, became part of the story of a performance that helped anchor one of the defining science-fiction films of its era.

What remains now is the body of work and the image of an actor who seemed most at home when playing steady, credible men under pressure. His family has not said more about the circumstances of his death beyond natural causes, and no further announcement has been made.
