The National Hurricane Center is watching an Atlantic tropical wave that could become Tropical Storm Dolly, and the system now has a 70% chance of developing into a tropical storm or depression. If it forms, it would be the fourth named storm of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season.
The timing is what has made the name jump out. Dolly Parton died on Aug. 25, and the coincidence has pulled fresh attention to a storm name that is already on the Atlantic list, even though the hurricane center says the name has nothing to do with her death.
The naming system is routine, not reactive. Storm names in the Atlantic and Eastern Pacific come from six rotating alphabetical lists that repeat every seventh year, and Dolly was chosen 30 years ago when it replaced Diana on the 1996 list. Diana had been a Category 2 hurricane that struck Mexico in 1990 and killed 139 people.
That history is why officials are treating the name as procedure, not tribute or omission. There are no plans to skip Dolly if the wave organizes, and the National Hurricane Center says it does not control when names are used or how they are assigned. The name has already been used three times during Parton’s lifetime, including for a tropical storm in 2020 and for Hurricane Dolly in 2008, which peaked as a Category 2 hurricane and struck the southeastern tip of Texas as a Category 1.
The overlap has also reopened memories of how Parton has responded in past disasters. After Helene swept across the southeastern United States in 2024, she announced a $1 million personal donation and said her businesses would match it with another $1 million. She also briefly sang a modified lyric to “Jolene” during that announcement, a reminder that her name has often carried a very different kind of weight in public life.
If the wave keeps organizing, the next step is straightforward: it becomes either a tropical depression or a tropical storm, and Dolly is the name already waiting on the list. The question now is not whether the name exists, but whether the Atlantic will use it.
