An 80-ton boulder known as the Mysterious Hanging Boulder fell at Polar Caves Park in New Hampshire on Sunday, toppling from a stretch of trail where it had hung above hikers’ heads for generations. No one was injured, and park management said the rock came down on the last day of the season.

That is why the hanging boulder falls Polar Caves NH search lands now: the event is over, but the consequences are just starting to be sorted out. The park said a safety assessment will be done during the offseason, and a video of the aftermath showed a smashed railing and the rest of the trail blocked off by the fallen rock.

The boulder had sat in place for the full 104 years of the park’s existence. A trail sign described it as cracked all the way through, resting on three contact points in the back, with 75 percent of the rock hanging over hikers’ heads. Joe Licciardi said the mass had been deposited in that position by a glacier thousands of years ago, and that the caves at Polar Caves are really spaces between granite boulders left behind by glaciers.

Jan Earle said the rock was a balanced stone with part of its weight on the base and part hanging out over the trail, and that gravity and erosion had long been working against it. She compared the slow failure to an old car rusting and then finally falling apart. That helps explain the part that does not fit neatly into the reassuring ending: the danger had been visible for years, yet nobody was in the boulder’s path when it finally came crashing down.

The immediate next step is an offseason review of the area, which will determine how much of the trail can reopen and whether the rest of the formation needs attention. For now, the fallen boulder sits upright on its side, and the park’s most famous overhang has become a reminder that a rock can hold for decades and still give way in a single day.
