Jennifer Garner said she wanted a role on The West Wing so badly that losing it sent her into the desert to sit alone for a couple of days. The setback, she said, lasted only two weeks before Alias came to her and changed the course of her career.
Garner made the remarks on Aspire With Emma Grede, where she described the rejection as something she had to grieve. She said she tested for the part, then made her first solo trip to Palm Springs after not getting it, calling the experience a mourning process after losing a role on a good show.
The role Garner auditioned for was previously reported to be Ainsley Hayes, and it ultimately went to Emily Proctor. Garner did not name the part in the quoted interview, but she was plain about how much it stung. “God, I wanted it so badly,” she said, and added that she had to go to the desert and “just sit there for a couple of days.”
What makes the story land now is the speed of what followed. Two weeks later, Garner said, Alias came to her, setting her up as Sydney Bristow in the action series that catapulted her to fame. The timing does not make the rejection feel less painful in her telling; it makes it look like the kind of break that only makes sense in hindsight.
Garner used that same conversation to talk about the practical pressure around her work after her split from Ben Affleck. She said she and her manager had a strategic conversation about how she could jump back in, and that she could work in Los Angeles but could not leave her children for six months at a time. She also said she looked into moving because of paparazzi pressure on her and her young children.
That leaves the question at the center of her account unresolved, and maybe that is the point. Garner clearly treats the West Wing loss and the Alias opportunity as part of the same early-career story, but she did not say the second came because of the first. What she did say is enough on its own: the rejection hurt, she let herself feel it, and two weeks later the role that made her famous arrived anyway.
