Northwestern came home to Ryan Field with a 5-1 record and a chance to keep its season moving toward bowl eligibility after a three-point win over Michigan State. Rutgers arrived at 2-4, but the matchup still carried weight because the Scarlet Knights had just beaten Maryland for their first Big Ten victory.

The game mattered now because Northwestern had not lost at home, was 4-0 overall in Evanston and had gone 2-0 at Ryan Field, giving the Wildcats a chance to turn a fast start into something more secure. Rutgers, meanwhile, had spent most of the season fighting through inconsistency, but it had at least shown it could hang around against USC and Maryland instead of folding after a rough 37-21 loss to UMass in Week 1.

That is where the numbers pointed toward Northwestern. Rutgers owned the Big Ten's last-ranked rush defense at 185.2 yards per game allowed, and Northwestern was expected to lean on its run game. Caleb Komolafe was projected to have a big day, while Dylan Lonergan's season line told the other side of the story: 213.2 passing yards per game, but six turnovers in five games. If Northwestern was going to make the home stretch easier on itself, this was the kind of matchup it should control on the ground.

But Rutgers had already shown a stubborn edge. It nearly upset USC, then followed that with a win over Maryland, and Antwan Raymond was the sort of player that made those games harder to dismiss. He was listed as questionable for Saturday morning after producing 161 total yards from scrimmage against USC, leaving Rutgers with one of its few offensive threats tied to a player whose status still mattered. If Raymond could go, Rutgers had a way to make this more than a comfort-zone home game for the Wildcats.

Northwestern had the cleaner path, and the better record, but the line between a smooth step toward bowl eligibility and another messy afternoon was thin. A team projected to cruise was still carrying the look of one that had barely survived its last game. Rutgers had already made that kind of assumption dangerous.
