Kyle Richards broke down after getting a text from Mauricio Umansky on what would have been their 30-year anniversary, turning a private wound into the center of a new TV preview. In the Aug. 16 look at Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip: Roaring 20th, Richards said the message “just sent me off.”
Richards said Jan. 20 would have marked the anniversary, and that the date still hits hard three years after she and Umansky confirmed their separation in 2023. “I’m just having a moment,” she said, adding, “Today’s my 30-year anniversary. It makes me sad.”
The text itself carried the weight of the scene. Richards said Umansky told her, “today’s always such a hard day and I love you,” then added, “I don’t know how we got here. I thought we were stronger than that. I really had thought that.” For a relationship that lasted 30 years and four children, the message landed like a final echo of what had already unraveled.
That same fragility is what made the reaction around her so sharp. Vicki Gunvalson said, “My heart is breaking for Kyle,” but then pushed harder, saying Richards had let her family and kids down and was showing them “it’s okay to bail out when things get tough.” Richards was shaken by that kind of judgment, especially from people who once looked at her marriage and saw proof that lasting love could still exist.
She said, “The thing that bothered me the most honestly was people saying that we gave them hope that true love existed,” and added, “And now, that went out the window for them.” Gunvalson, who said she once felt the same way about staying together forever, framed the split through her own past divorce from Donn 16 years ago. Richards pushed back against becoming a cautionary tale, saying, “When I hear Vicki say that the pain still lives within her, it scares me,” and, “I want to be past this. I don’t want to be Vicki.”
The breakup itself is not new; what is new is how raw it still looks when the anniversary date comes back around. The preview turns that old wound into fresh television, and it leaves one question hanging in plain sight: what happened between Richards and Umansky that brought them from a 30-year marriage to a text that starts with, “I don’t know how we got here”?
