Disney has set September 2 as the global streaming date for Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu on Disney+, putting the film on the service 103 days after its theatrical release.
For viewers who missed it in theaters, that means the movie is about to become the next major Star Wars title available at home. The timing also closes the loop on a release that began with a strong Memorial Day launch and now has a fixed date for its move from cinemas to streaming.
The window matters because the film did not linger in theaters for long before heading to Disney+. A 103-day gap is long enough to let the box office run play out, but short enough to keep the title in circulation while interest is still fresh. Disney made the call after a movie that led the Memorial Day box office with a $167 million global start and ended at $345M worldwide.
That final total sits in uncomfortable contrast with what the film cost before P&A, which was $165M. It means the movie roughly doubled that figure at the global box office, yet still finished as the lowest-grossing live-action Star Wars movie ever. The gap between a headline-opening weekend and the eventual finish explains why the streaming date now lands with more than routine significance.
The title itself came out of Disney+ first, over three seasons that built the IP before it was expanded into feature form. The same universe also spun into Ahsoka and The Book of Boba Fett. Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu was co-written by Jon Favreau, Noah Kloor and Dave Filoni, and produced by Ian Bryce, Kathleen Kennedy, Favreau and Filoni.
Pedro Pascal stars in the film alongside Sigourney Weaver, David Allen White and Martin Scorsese. Disney has not said why it chose exactly 103 days before sending the movie to Disney+, but the date now gives subscribers a clear answer. The next Star Wars film landing in theaters is Star Wars: Starfighter, set for next year's Memorial Day opener.
