Rebecca De Paula died after breast implant removal surgery in the Dominican Republic, and her family is pressing for an inquiry into what went wrong. She was 31.
De Paula had gone to Santo Domingo for the procedure, and her relatives say she developed a bacterial infection during recovery that led to her death. They are calling for an investigation into possible malpractice, while there is still no information on whether the Dominican government's health department has begun one.
The case has drawn attention because De Paula had joined the New York Police Department in January 2025 and was stationed at the 46th Precinct in the Bronx. In March, the precinct honored her as officer of the month, a recognition that now frames the loss of a young officer who had only recently started her career.
Colleagues and the Dominican Officers' Fraternal Association described her as dedicated to her faith and community, underscoring how quickly her death has moved from a private tragedy to a public question. The hospital where she had the surgery has not been named, and the Police Department did not immediately issue a statement.
Her remains are expected to be repatriated back home for burial, leaving the family with grief and an unanswered question at the center of the story: whether her death after routine surgery was a medical complication, a lapse in care, or something that still has not been formally examined.
