Darnell Wright and the Chicago Bears agreed to a four-year, $116 million contract extension that makes him the highest-paid right tackle in the NFL and gives him $93 million guaranteed. Wright was already under contract through 2031 when the final two years of his rookie deal were added to the new extension, so the agreement deepens a partnership he had already said he wanted to last. Before the deal, Wright said, “I know I’ll be here for a long time. Hopefully my whole career.”
The size of the contract is what turns this from a routine extension into a benchmark. At $29 million per year, Wright now holds the top average annual value at right tackle, and the guaranteed money is the most ever for an offensive lineman in NFL history. That is the number that matters most to the market, because it pushes the ceiling for players at one of the sport’s most demanding positions.
There is, though, a wrinkle in the way the deal lands. Wright’s extension is being described as the biggest ever for a right tackle, but its total value is listed behind a Tampa Bay Buccaneers tackle in that particular ranking. That does not diminish the commitment Chicago made; it simply shows that NFL contract records can split along different measures, with annual value, guarantees and total dollars all telling slightly different stories.
For Wright, the practical result is simple: he is now tied to the Chicago Bears for the long haul, with a contract that runs through 2031 and puts him among the best-paid players at his position. For the Bears, it is a clear sign they are betting that a player who has ascended into the league’s top tier at tackle is still only getting started.
