A flash flood triggered by sudden heavy rainfall killed at least 10 people and injured 23 others at a tourist destination in Weiyuan county, Dingxi city, Gansu province, on Sunday. Rescue teams were dispatched after several tourists camping in the scenic area were trapped.
The sudden surge hit in northwestern China and turned a day of travel into an emergency in minutes. The injured and the dead make clear how fast the weather changed and how hard it struck people who were already out in the open when the water came.
Local public security and rescue departments sent teams to the site as soon as the flood was reported. The response matters because the trapped tourists were only described as several, leaving open how many were caught in the scenic area and whether all of them made it out safely.
That gap is the hardest part of the story now. The death toll is already high, the injury count is fixed, and the next question is no longer what the flood was, but how many people were still waiting to be found after the water fell back.
