Romania says one of its F-16 fighter jets shot down a drone that crossed into its airspace without authorization on Friday, making it the first time the country has intercepted and destroyed a drone inside its national airspace. Foreign Minister Oana Țoiu said the interception happened over an unpopulated area in Buzău County and took place at 11:02 AM.
Țoiu wrote on X that a Romanian pilot flying an F-16 carried out the shootdown after the drone entered Romanian airspace without permission. Her post framed the move as a direct response to a breach that ended with the drone falling out of the sky over Romanian territory, though officials did not immediately say where the wreckage landed or whether it was recovered.
The interception matters because Romania has spent years living with the spillover from Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Since 2022, it has reported dozens of drone incursions or debris incidents, a drumbeat of alerts that has turned what once looked exceptional into something closer to routine along NATO’s eastern flank.
That broader pattern explains why the same episode produced both certainty and uncertainty. Romania’s army chief said pilots described the drone as appearing to be a Shahed-type drone, a model linked to Iran and widely used by Russia against Ukraine, yet Romanian officials said they had not identified its origin or purpose. The label pointed one way; the official record stopped short of saying so.
The event also comes after another close call on July 2, when Russian drones were detected inside Ukraine roughly 19 miles from Romania’s border. That prompted two Royal Air Force Eurofighter Typhoon jets to scramble from Romania’s 86th Air Base in Fetești under NATO’s Enhanced Air Policing mission, while a Romanian Air Force IAR 330 Puma helicopter was also deployed.
For now, the clearest takeaway is that Romania has crossed a line it had not crossed before. A drone entered its airspace, a fighter jet shot it down, and the country is still trying to answer the harder question: whether this was a stray piece of the war next door or a deliberate probe of NATO airspace.
