Conor McGregor is back where the spotlight is brightest, stepping into the octagon at UFC 329 in Las Vegas after five years away. On Saturday night, the 37-year-old is scheduled to face Max Holloway, but the return comes with the legal fallout from the civil case that found against him and ordered him to pay Nikita Hand €248,000 in damages.
That is why the fight is being searched now: this is not just a comeback, it is McGregor’s first return after a long absence and after a courtroom defeat that refused to fade. Hand said outside court that the appeal process had re-traumatised her over and over again, adding that what happened has had a huge impact on her.
The civil case turned on a lower standard of proof than the criminal one. Hand alleged that McGregor raped her in a Dublin hotel room in December 2018, while McGregor denies the allegation. The Irish director of public prosecutions twice told Hand in 2020 that they would not prosecute because there was no reasonable prospect of conviction, but the civil jury still found for Hand. In the courtroom, paramedic Eithne Scully testified that she had not seen someone so bruised, with that intensity of bruising.
That gap between the criminal decision and the civil finding is the friction that still hangs over McGregor’s return. He appealed the civil jury's decision after the finding against him, yet three senior judges at the Court of Appeal in Dublin dismissed his appeal on all grounds in July 2025. McGregor has kept insisting he is innocent and told the UFC media day this week, “Hallelujah, the Mac is back.”
The return now moves from legal history to live sport, but the history is not gone. Hand has said, “To every survivor out there, I know how hard it is, but please, don’t be silenced,” and added, “Today, I can finally move on and try to heal.” McGregor’s next confirmed test is Holloway on Saturday night, and the crowd in Las Vegas will be watching a comeback that arrives with a case already decided against him.
