Climate Change heat wave linked to over 1,300 deaths as Sentinel-3 tracks Europe

A heat wave that swept across Europe earlier this month has been linked to more than 1,300 deaths, as satellite data from Sentinel-3 showed just how far and how hot the event reached. On June 23, France recorded its hottest June day ever, and the satellite picked up surface temperatures that climbed to 131 degrees Fahrenheit in parts of central Spain, western France and northern Africa.

That is why the numbers are landing now. Sentinel-3, which measures real-time temperature over land and water with its Sea and Land Surface Temperature Radiometer, gives researchers a way to map the event while the damage is still being assessed. Madrid reached 118 degrees Fahrenheit and Rome 111 degrees, part of a stretch of temperatures that were unprecedented across much of Europe.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus put the broader warning plainly on X: Europe is the fastest-warming continent on Earth, heating at twice the global average. That framing matters because the heat wave was not just a spike on a thermometer; it was an emergency measured in deaths, with World Health Organization authorities estimating that over 1,300 deaths may be linked to the event.

There is still a gap in the public picture. The figures connect the heat wave to mortality, but they do not break down where those deaths happened or how they were assigned to the episode. What is clear is that the event has already become a test case for how climate change turns extreme heat into a public-health toll, and Sentinel-3 is helping document it in near real time.
