One person was killed and three others were shot in two separate incidents on the campus of Winston-Salem State University on Saturday night, turning the school’s homecoming weekend into a crime scene. Police first received a call about a shooting around 9:45 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7.

By 3:24 a.m. Sunday, WXII 12 News had updated its reporting to confirm the death. Forsyth County Emergency Medical Services said three shooting victims were taken to a hospital, but authorities had not publicly identified the person who died or said whether any of the victims were students.

The shootings came as Winston-Salem State was holding its annual homecoming celebration, including a football matchup against Fayetteville State University at Bowman Gray Stadium. Winston-Salem State, founded in 1892, is a public HBCU and part of the University of North Carolina System.

What remains unresolved is the most basic question from the night: whether the two shooting incidents were connected. Police had not released suspect information or announced any arrests, and details about where on campus the shootings happened were still not confirmed.

For now, the campus is left with a fatal shooting, three injured victims and no public explanation for how the night unfolded. The investigation is still doing the work that the homecoming crowd could not see.
