The Red Stitch opened in August in Jefferson Plaza on Jefferson Highway, giving Baton Rouge a new place to buy needlepoint supplies and sit down with other stitchers. Sarah Edgecomb, who owns the shop, said she wanted a creative sanctuary as much as a retail space.
That timing matters because the shop is already drawing interest as a place to do something with your hands instead of another thing on a screen. Edgecomb, who has an LSU finance degree, said she came to needlepoint two summers ago at a lake house, when she picked up a canvas from an online kit and loved it so much she ordered three more kits right away.
Now she is trying to make that first spark feel public. The Red Stitch at 7517 Jefferson Highway offers open stitching classes and mahjong events, with Edgecomb inviting new and old stitchers to hang out, shop and learn from one another. She said, “Everybody gets so excited about other people’s projects,” and described the shop as a place where the colors alone can change the way a room feels.
That social pull is part of the appeal, but it sits alongside a quieter one. Edgecomb said it is easy to get sucked into devices and scroll, then added that the shop gives the brain a break and fills a craving people may not even notice they have. In her view, the draw is not just the finished piece. It is the pause, and the people beside you while you make it.
Edgecomb said that is why she built the business around connection and not just inventory. She said, “We all play off each other’s energies,” and added that when she has an overwhelming day, she can stitch for 20 minutes, take one full thread and get recentered. The question now is how far that kind of space can go in Baton Rouge: as of now, The Red Stitch is not just selling the hobby, it is testing whether a small shop can become a regular stop for people looking to slow down together.
