Netflix has set Brian Tyree Henry as the voice of Bass Reeves in its new animated series Bass x Machina, and he is also on board as an executive producer. The show, created by LeSean Thomas and produced by Studio Mir, puts a legendary lawman at the center of a stylized Western built for animation.

That is the hook drawing attention now: Henry is not just fronting the series, he is helping shape it. Janelle Monáe sings the theme song, while the cast also includes Tati Gabrielle, Chaske Spencer, Cree Summer, Starletta DuPois and Currie Graham, giving the project a recognizable lineup around a story that is meant to move fast and hit hard.

The series leans into a world that is more myth than museum piece. Its version of Bass Reeves has a robot arm, and the setting mixes bull-shaped mechanical suits, goop-shooting guns, women who control lightning and a high-tech monorail with racially segregated cars. Dana Starr, an aspiring engineer, is searching for her missing uncle, and Bass has a wife, a third child on the way and one last bounty job pulling him into the Badlands with her.

Even with all that machinery, the show keeps only a narrow link to actual history. Bass Reeves’s existence and the recent Civil War are the main factual anchors, while the rest is a steampunk spin on a real figure whose life has already echoed through popular culture. The series also puts prejudice and segregated travel conditions in view, which gives its fantasy setting a sharper edge than a simple action adventure would have.

There is still one piece viewers have not been given: a premiere date. For now, Bass x Machina is arriving as a casting and creative-team announcement first, with Henry at the center of a project that wants to turn a historic marshal into the lead of an anime-inspired Western rather than a standard period drama.
