Jesus de Miguel died on Tuesday at the age of 30 after suffering a cardiac arrest following a collision in Tenerife's match against FC Andorra, turning a late-game incident into a tragedy that halted play and left the club mourning one of its own. The game was abandoned seven minutes into stoppage time after the collision, and medical staff treated him on the pitch for more than five minutes before he was taken to hospital by ambulance.

What made the shock harder to absorb was the sequence that followed. CD Tenerife first said Jesus de Miguel Alameda had been admitted to hospital and was stable despite the severity of his condition, but later said his condition had worsened neurologically before confirming his death. The club said it had nothing that could ease its sadness and asked for privacy for his family, while FC Andorra issued condolences on X and LaLiga said it was deeply saddened by the passing of Jesús de Miguel Alameda.

The collision came when Jesus Owono rushed out of his area to clear a long ball and struck de Miguel, and the goalkeeper was sent off immediately afterward. From that moment, the match stopped being about football. Tenerife, which plays in the second tier of Spanish football, could not complete the game, and the fallout quickly spread beyond the stadium as FC Barcelona and Real Madrid also sent condolences to his family, team-mates, club and loved ones.

Javier Tebas said he would make league resources available to the club and the family and that he would speak with Tenerife about postponing their next match, but the medical question at the center of the tragedy remains unanswered in public. What is clear is that a collision that began as a routine aerial clearance ended with a player dead, a match abandoned and a club facing the kind of grief that no statement can soften.
