At least seven people were injured early Sunday morning in a shooting near the Indiana University campus in Bloomington, turning a crowded homecoming weekend night into a fast-moving crime scene. Officers were called to Kirkwood Avenue near Grant Street around 1:30 a.m. after hearing multiple gunshots in a large crowd.
The location matters because this was not a remote stretch of road. It happened three blocks from the IU campus, on a street known as a student gathering spot, and it unfolded after the Indiana football Hoosiers beat Minnesota in an overtime stunner earlier in the evening. For students and families still out celebrating, the timing made the violence feel even more abrupt.
Bloomington Deputy Chief of Police Ryan Pedigo said officers later saw a man with a gun running from the scene. Police took one person into custody and found a gun nearby, but they do not know whether that person is the shooter. That uncertainty is the central problem investigators are still working through.
Police also found shell casings of various calibers on the sidewalk near the scene, a sign of how chaotic the episode was. The victims' conditions are still unknown, and no deaths have been reported, but officers are still trying to determine whether other injured people left before help arrived and have yet to report. In other words, the count could still change, and so could the picture of who fired the shots.
For Bloomington, the immediate next step is not a finished narrative but a verified one: who fired, how many were hurt, and whether anyone else was caught up in the chaos and has not come forward yet. Until police answer those questions, the most important fact is already clear — a homecoming night near IU ended with at least seven people wounded and a community waiting for the rest of the story.
