A 28-year-old woman was critically injured Friday night after being stabbed multiple times in the neck while jogging along a Brooklyn waterfront path, and police on Saturday said she remained alive as investigators searched for a suspect. The attack happened around 8 p.m. near Shore Parkway and Bay 17th Street in Bath Beach.

Police said the woman was jogging eastbound on the Shore Parkway Greenway when she was attacked. Emergency medical personnel took her to NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn, where she remained in critical condition. The location added to the shock: the path runs along Gravesend Bay and looks out toward Staten Island and the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge.

The stabbing drew wider attention because the woman was reported to have been training for Sunday's New York City Marathon, though New York Road Runners said it could not confirm whether she planned to run in the race. The group said its records show she had previously participated in its races and expressed sympathy for her family and the running community.

That uncertainty has left investigators with two basic gaps to close: who attacked her and why. Police have not released her identity, and it was not immediately clear whether she knew the person who stabbed her, or what led up to the assault.

For runners, the immediate concern is the same one police are trying to answer. A woman went out for a run on a waterfront path and came back in critical condition, and by Saturday the most important fact was still unresolved: no suspect had been identified.
