ABC World News Tonight with David Muir finished the week of Oct. 19, 2026, as the No. 1 program in total viewers across all of broadcast and cable excluding sports, drawing an average of 8.837 million viewers. For David Muir, it was a clear win in a measurement period that put ABC's evening newscast ahead of every other show Nielsen tracked in that broad category.

The ranking was based on Live+Same Day Big Data Plus Panel Program Ratings from Nielsen Media Research, and it reflects the 6:30 to 7:00 p.m. ET broadcast that reaches Viewers of ABC each weekday. That makes the Nielsen Evening News Ratings October 19 result more than a simple weekly tally: it is a direct read on how a half-hour newscast performed against the full field of television that week.

The comparison is not perfectly even. NBC Nightly News was preempted on Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2026, which means the weekly averages for the evening newscasts were not built on the same number of days. World News Tonight and CBS Evening News were calculated over four days, Monday through Thursday, while NBC Nightly News was based on three days, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.

That uneven count matters because the retitled Friday telecasts were excluded from the weekly and season averages, leaving the week to be judged on different sample sizes at the end of the measurement period. Chris Dinan, the executive producer of World News Tonight with David Muir, had a first-place total-viewer result to point to, but the numbers also show how much these weekly Nielsen standings depend on scheduling as well as audience size.

Even with that distortion in the background, the result still lands the same way for ABC: World News Tonight came out on top for the week of Oct. 19, 2026, and the next weekly report will show whether that lead holds once the averages are built on a cleaner, more even set of broadcasts.
