A 28-year-old woman was critically injured Friday night after she was stabbed multiple times in the neck while jogging along a Brooklyn waterfront path near Shore Parkway and Bay 17th Street. Police said she was running eastbound on the Shore Parkway Greenway when the attack happened around 8 p.m.
Emergency medical personnel took her to NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn in critical condition, and an NYPD spokesperson said Saturday that she was still alive. Police have not identified a suspect.
The attack matters now because it landed on the eve of Sunday's New York City Marathon, a race that draws thousands of runners into the city each year and turns attention to anyone training on the route and its surrounding paths. The waterfront stretch where she was attacked sits in Brooklyn's Bath Beach neighborhood along Gravesend Bay, a place used by runners and walkers alike.
The New York Post reported, citing police sources, that the woman had been training for Sunday's marathon. New York Road Runners said its records show she had previously taken part in its races, but the group could not confirm whether she planned to run this weekend. That leaves a key detail unresolved even as the focus shifts to the attack itself.
What is not known is as important as what is. Investigators have not said what led up to the stabbing, and it is still unclear whether the woman knew her attacker. For now, police are left searching for the person who struck her on a crowded weekend path, while the running community is left waiting for answers.
