Karol Nawrocki entered the Trybunał Konstytucyjny on October 31 as scuffles broke out outside the building and protesters clashed with police. His arrival, alongside representatives of Kancelaria Prezydenta, turned an already heated dispute over control of the court into a live confrontation at the door.

The scene drew fresh attention because this was not a symbolic visit. A photo posted by Rafał Leśkiewicz showed Nawrocki inside the court with Zbigniew Bogucki, Bartosz Grodecki, Zbigniew Kapiński and Bartłomiej Sochański, while video from the same place showed people grabbing at the president and chants outside that pushed the political fight into public view. Leśkiewicz also wrote, “Tyle są warte ich słowa.”

Behind the noise, the fight is over who can actually run the institution. Weronika Ścibor said the documents ordering a break in the official duties of the president and vice-president of the TK were non-existent, even as the building was being pressed over by people the current Sejm had chosen for the court and the police had blocked access around the site over concerns for the safety of judges and staff. That is why the standoff was not just about access, but about authority.

The contradiction is what gives the day its weight. Waldemar Żurek said, “Każdy, kto łamie prawo, stanie przed sądem,” while police urged demonstrators to act within the law. At the same time, the footage and the statements from inside the court pulled in opposite directions: one side said the takeover attempt was illegal, the other treated the documents and the police barrier as proof that the court itself was being pushed into paralysis.

For Nawrocki, the next step is immediate and public. He was preparing to go out to the protesters, and the moment he does, the conflict will move from a sealed interior dispute to the crowd waiting outside. What remains unresolved is not whether the confrontation happened, but who, after today’s exchange of documents, statements and force, can still claim command of the Trybunał Konstytucyjny.
