T-Mobile chief Srini Gopalan said on the company’s third-quarter earnings call that he sees no room for a SpaceX MVNO, shutting down the clearest path yet for a broader wholesale tie-up between the two companies. He said that was true on the consumer side and on the physical and Edge AI side.
The rejection matters now because it came with the quarterly results, when the carrier was asked directly how it would judge any SpaceX proposal. Gopalan said T-Mobile looks for an MVNO to bring incremental TAM, new distribution channels or incremental capability, and said he does not see that here because the company already believes it leads in those areas.
SpaceX is still pursuing spectrum and has reportedly sought access to at least 80,000 U.S. cell sites for a hybrid network, a model that would have to blend satellite and terrestrial coverage if it were to work at scale. Gopalan’s answer leaves that concept without a wholesale mobile partner at T-Mobile, at least for now.
He also drew a bright line between a broad MVNO and a narrower commercial arrangement. T-Mobile is already working with Amazon Web Services on Kinetic Edge, and Gopalan said a purely commercial deal with SpaceX could still make sense if the product were complementary. He pointed to T-Satellite as a resale arrangement, not a full MVNO, and said that is the kind of structure he would be willing to consider.
That said, he argued the strategic fit is weak in the areas SpaceX is trying to open up. Gopalan said satellite broadband is inferior to fixed wireless in many cases outside some deep-rural areas, added that he does not see synergy between fixed wireless access and satellite, and noted that two-thirds of T-Mobile’s fixed wireless access customers are in dense urban areas. In his telling, the company already has the stronger product and the wider base.
The result is a clear pause in the SpaceX-T-Mobile discussion rather than a full break. If SpaceX wants more than a resale relationship, it will have to find another path, because T-Mobile’s view is that a SpaceX MVNO would not add customers, distribution or capability.
