The University of Providence will close after the 2026-2027 academic year, ending 94 years of education after the Board of Trustees voted to cease the university’s educational operations at the conclusion of that term. The final day of instruction is set for August 20, 2027.
The announcement on Tuesday gives students, families and employees a firm end date and turns a financial crisis into a calendar. Dr. Caroline Goulet said the university will focus on helping students complete their degrees or move to another institution while also supporting alumni and the Great Falls community through the closure.
The University of Providence is a private, Roman Catholic liberal arts university founded by the Sisters of Providence in 1932. Its closure marks the end of a long run in Montana and comes after the board formally declared financial exigency on December 25, 2025.
The university said it had already tried to slow the damage by restructuring academic programs, cutting operating expenses, pursuing new enrollment and revenue strategies, and looking for partnerships with other institutions. Those steps eased the immediate strain, but they did not produce a long-term operating model that could keep the school open.
That is the friction at the center of the decision: the university will keep operating through the 2026-2027 academic year even after voting to end educational operations. It also said certain academic and administrative functions will continue after August 20, 2027 so final grades, academic records and other remaining needs can be handled.
The closure follows pressure from Providence Health, which told the university it must become financially independent by December 2027 and would not cover the deficit. The specific shortfall was not disclosed, but the message made the math plain: with no outside support and no viable path to balance, the university chose an orderly shutdown rather than a sudden collapse. For now, the last classes will go on, and the work ahead is about helping people finish what they started before the doors finally close.
